Why do we all feel like we have to set New Years Resolutions? Every January, I'm so certain that this year I will make all the big changes in my life. I'm going to eat better and exercise. I'm going to make a budget and stick to it this time. This year I'm finally going to finish all those home projects I've been wanting to do, and get out of debt, and get back to pursuing my hobbies, and spend more time with my husband, kids, parents, friends, and finally get that promotion at work I know I can get if I can just work a little harder this year. There's plenty of time in the day for all that, isn't there? There's plenty of days in the year to do all this, right?

It doesn't seem too much to ask to want these changes in my life through the course of this year, so why do so many of us give up on our desires?
First of all, the real reason I think that we feel the need for New Years resolutions is because we probably let too much go during the Christmas season. For me personally, there are 3 things: 1) I rearrange our whole house to decorate for Christmas, (some times the outside as well as the inside) then when it's time to put it all back together I notice the things I wish were different. 2) I spent too much money on gifts and travel and fun times with family. 3) There are goodies to eat every time I turn around, throwing my diet right out the window. Then when all the fun is over, I have to deal with the aftermath.
So the clean up begins.
Cleaning up the bank account and repairing a budget (or credit score.)
Cleaning up the house to put away the decor and presents.
Cleaning up our bodies from all the junk that was eaten and lack of exercise.
I feel terrible and as a result I resolve never to do that again.... But I'll probably be right back here again next January 1st.
The real problem with resolutions is that we are expecting change overnight.
Some resolutions may be easy to keep because it is really just getting back to the life you lived prior to the craziness and excitement of the holidays.
